The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Westville campus quad came alive with energy, laughter, and collaboration as the Department of Biokinetics, Exercise and Leisure Sciences hosted a dynamic teambuilding event aimed at promoting student wellbeing, leadership, and practical learning.
Designed as both an educational and wellness initiative, the event brought students together in a vibrant and interactive environment that encouraged teamwork, stress relief, and personal development ahead of the demanding June examination period.
The programme was facilitated by second-year students under the mentorship and guidance of third-year students, creating valuable opportunities for peer leadership, mentorship, and the practical application of organisational and management skills.
The initiative was also designed to reduce academic stress and support psychological wellbeing during one of the most demanding periods of the academic calendar. Through engaging and collaborative activities, students were able to step away from academic pressures, recharge mentally, and reconnect socially.
Students were divided into mixed teams upon arrival, encouraging interaction and collaboration across different peer groups. The quad quickly transformed into a lively arena as participants tackled a variety of physical and mental challenges, including tug of war, human knot, relay balloon pop, lava floor, blindfold challenge, balloon cup collector, team ski race, balloon balance race, hula hoop pass, and the cup pyramid challenge.
Each activity required co-ordination, communication, strategy, and trust, allowing students to strengthen teamwork skills while enjoying friendly competition. Throughout the day, participants demonstrated resilience, leadership, and strong team spirit as they encouraged one another and celebrated achievements together.
The closing rounds of the competition proved to be one of the highlights of the day, with teams showcasing exceptional collaboration and determination. The winning team received water bottles as prizes, while the runners-up were awarded key holders. In the spirit of inclusivity and appreciation, all participants received chips and sweets in recognition of their involvement.
Serving as master of ceremonies, second-year student, Mr Zekhethelo Mkhize reflected on the experience with enthusiasm. “It was a good experience for me, especially since it was my first time in this role. It was an honour to address a large number of students and facilitate the programme. I was very excited to see students happy, actively participating, and enjoying the various activities, which made the experience meaningful and memorable for me,” he said.
Providing insight into the academic value of the event, Recreation lecturer Dr Khumbuzile Khumalo explained that the programme was designed to bridge theory and practice. “This team building was designed to train students to become independent and to apply all four components of management. It aimed to take theory into practice and to prepare students not to be scared of facing challenges in the real world,” said Khumalo.
“As students enrolled in the recreation module, this experience was specifically aligned to strengthen their understanding of how recreation is applied in practical settings. I would like to thank all participants in the event and wish all students good luck in their June exams.”
Khumalo also acknowledged the support received from colleagues and leadership.
“I also extend words of appreciation to my Academic Leader, Professor Rowena Naidoo, and staff members for their strong support and commitment, which made the event possible and successful,” she added.
As the event concluded, students reflected on lessons learned in communication, patience, leadership, teamwork, and resilience. Many expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect with peers outside the classroom in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.
The teambuilding event successfully combined learning, recreation, and wellbeing, leaving students better prepared mentally and emotionally for the challenges of the upcoming examination period.
