Determination Helps Secure Distinction for BSc Data Scientist

Mr Keegan Brown has graduated summa cum laude with a BSc degree in Data Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). His path to success was not without its challenges but his determination to seize the opportunity set him apart.

Initially, Brown had his sights on a slightly different career path: “I wanted to pursue Actuarial Science, but owing to financial constraints I was not able to attend a university that offered the programme,” he explained. A pivotal moment came when his parents connected with UKZN’s former Dean and Head of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, Professor Delia North, who introduced him to the University’s Data Science degree. “From that point, I realised that this path would still allow me to develop strong analytical and quantitative skills, while also gaining exposure to computer science and data science,” he said.

Motivated by this realisation, Brown committed himself fully to his studies. “I decided that if I worked hard and maintained strong academic results, I could create opportunities for myself, including the possibility of securing bursaries to support my studies further,” he said.

Brown engaged with a wide range of modules across Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Science throughout his degree, and appreciated the collective impact of these courses on his development. “I enjoyed all of these modules, not just for their content, but also because of the quality of teaching, which made the learning experience both engaging and rewarding,” he said.

In Statistics, he found the Applied Probability Models and Random Processes modules particularly engaging, crediting lecturers for their clarity and support. His Mathematics studies were equally enriching, with the Discrete Mathematics with Applications and Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra modules standing out for both their intellectual depth and presentation. In Computer Science, Theory of Computation and Artificial Intelligence modules captured his interest, especially through their real-world applications and accessible teaching.

Brown’s passion for data science stems from its interdisciplinary nature. “I was motivated by the opportunity to study both Statistics and Computer Science, two fields I had always been interested in but had not been widely exposed to before University,” he said. He was particularly drawn to how these disciplines intersect to address practical challenges. “Data Science appealed to me because it combines these disciplines to solve real-world problems, allowing me to work with data, build models and develop practical solutions.

“I also enjoy analysing data to identify patterns and using those insights to make predictions about outcomes,” he shared. “The ability to take complex information and use it to understand and anticipate real-world behaviour better, is something I find both challenging and rewarding.”

Looking ahead, Brown plans to pursue either a master’s degree in Statistics or begin working in a role related to data science or quantitative analysis. “My goal is to continue developing both my statistical and programming skills and to apply them in a professional environment where I can solve meaningful, real-world problems,” he said.

He acknowledged the support systems that made his success possible. “I could not have achieved nor accomplished what I did without the help of Jesus Christ,” he said. He further thanked his family and lecturers for their encouragement and guidance.

Outside his academic commitments, Brown pursues knowledge in his own time, watching a variety of informative YouTube videos, including ones on statistics and computer science. He has an interest in history and enjoys learning about historical events and their impact on the present. “I find it rewarding to expand my knowledge continuously beyond what is covered in my coursework,” he said.

He offered advice to fellow students: “Stay committed to your goals and make the most of the resources available to you. Consistent effort can open many doors. By always striving to do your best, you give yourself the greatest chance of achieving your goals without looking back with regret over missed opportunities.”
