A testament to resilience and discipline: Ms Ritikka Ramkissoon earns her BSS.Resilience and Determination Earn Cum Laude Success
Graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Psychology and Criminology and Forensic Studies, Ms Ritikka Ramkissoon’s academic journey is a testament to resilience, discipline, and unwavering family support.
Raised in a close-knit family alongside her parents and sister, Ramkissoon credits her success to the strong foundation of support that has guided her throughout her studies. “Family plays a vital role in my life as I am a family-oriented individual,” she shared.
Her academic journey began under unusual circumstances, as she was among the cohort of students whose schooling was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. During Grades 10 and 11, limited school attendance and the absence of structured online learning meant that much of her education became self-directed. “We were given work to complete with very limited direct teaching, which made the learning process challenging,” she explained.
Despite these early disruptions, Ramkissoon adapted and developed the independence required to succeed academically. However, her resilience was tested again during her final year when she experienced the loss of her grandmother, who lived with her family. “Her passing had a significant impact on us, but I remained committed to my studies and persevered both emotionally and academically,” she said.
Maintaining balance between her academic responsibilities and personal life required careful planning. Ramkissoon structured her time to focus on coursework during the week, reserving weekends for family. During high-pressure periods such as exams, she adjusted her priorities accordingly, while still making time for activities she enjoys, including cooking and baking. These moments, she noted, provided a necessary outlet to manage stress.
Her disciplined approach to studying also played a crucial role in her success. By breaking down content into manageable sections and revising consistently, she avoided last-minute cramming and built a strong understanding of her coursework over time.
Throughout her degree, Ramkissoon’s support system remained a constant source of motivation. From small gestures like checking in after exams to late-night study companionship and preparing her favourite meals, her family’s encouragement made a meaningful difference. “They created a sense of stability that kept me motivated and on track,” she said.
Her hard work was recognised through numerous accolades, including three Dean’s Commendations, two Certificates of Merit, and ultimately graduating cum laude. In addition, she was awarded a Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA)-funded scholarship that supported her throughout her undergraduate studies.
Reflecting on her achievements, Ramkissoon described the moment as deeply rewarding. “It is a proud moment not only for me but for my family as well,” she said. “These accomplishments represent growth and perseverance through difficult circumstances. They remind me that consistency and determination matter, even when progress is not immediately visible.”
Currently pursuing her Honours degree in Psychology, Ramkissoon plans to continue expanding her knowledge and making meaningful contributions within the field.
She encourages fellow students to stay focused on their long-term goals. “Think of your goals as achieved by a future version of yourself and work towards becoming that person. Every challenge brings you closer to that vision,” she advised.
In a heartfelt message to her loved ones, she expressed deep gratitude: “I will always be grateful for your unwavering support. Your encouragement has given me strength and peace, knowing I can rely on you in everything I do.”
Her family, Mr Prakash Ramkissoon, Mrs Rosanna Ramkissoon and Ms Ritisia Ramkissoon shared their pride, saying, “We are incredibly proud of Ritikka and all that she has achieved. She has shown determination and discipline, even during the most challenging times. This milestone is a rewarding and proud experience for us, and we wish her all the best as she continues her studies.”
