Ms Courtney Louter graduates summa cum laude.Graduate Credits Faith, Focus and Love of Literature for Academic Excellence
For Ms Courtney Louter, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Media and Cultural Studies is a moment grounded not only in academic excellence but in faith, perseverance, and the unwavering support of those around her.
Currently pursuing her Bachelor of Arts Honours in English, Louter’s undergraduate success has already set her apart as a dedicated and reflective scholar. Her journey over the past three years has been shaped by a deep curiosity about literature and its power to influence how people see and understand the world.
“This achievement is only possible because of God. My family and I are deeply aware of His overwhelming grace and provision over not only this journey but our lives; living by Philippians 4:19 that ...God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus,” Louter said. “It has been a journey guided by faith, but also by the incredible support I’ve received from my family, lecturers, and peers.”
It was her early fascination with storytelling sparked by authors such as C S Lewis which evolved into a more critical and analytical engagement with literature during her time at UKZN. Her studies in English, combined with Media and Cultural Studies and History electives, allowed her to explore not only how narratives are constructed but why they emerge within specific social and political contexts.
“At UKZN, I learned to look beyond the surface of a story,” she explains. “I became interested in the structures behind narratives and how they shape our perceptions of reality.”
Her academic journey was further enriched by an international exchange at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in South Korea, where she gained new perspectives on literature and culture in a global context. Coupled with practical experience through internships in publishing and news media, Louter was able to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice.
Central to her success has been the strong support system provided by UKZN. She credits her lecturers for their mentorship and guidance, noting that their encouragement helped her refine her academic voice and pursue excellence. This support was further affirmed through her recent award of the UKZN Postgraduate Summa Cum Laude Scholarship, which has enabled her to fully dedicate herself to her honours studies.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the University for investing in my academic potential,” she said. “This scholarship has given me the space to focus on my research and pursue my goals with confidence.”
This year, as she balances postgraduate studies with her role as a tutor in English modules, Louter has embraced the opportunity to give back. Teaching has not only reinforced her own knowledge, but also highlighted the importance of mentorship and academic support.
“Helping students navigate literary analysis reminds me of the support I received,” Louter said. “It’s about empowering others while continuing to grow oneself.”
Looking ahead, Louter hopes to build a career in academia or the publishing industry, contributing to South Africa’s intellectual and creative landscape. Whether in the lecture hall or the editorial space, her goal is to foster critical thinking and support the development of meaningful narratives.
