Ms Lorna Norolela and Ms Sonalia Naidoo. The Inspiring Journey to Merit
Apart from navigating both personal and academic challenges, Ms Sonalia Naidoo and Ms Lorna Norolela have excelled in their studies, graduating with academic distinction in Media and Cultural Studies.
Naidoo completed her Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Media Studies and English. Norolela, meanwhile, obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), where she examined the influence of TikTok on the influx of digital nomads in Africa and its contribution to the gentrification of African cities.
Norolela shared that her research topic was inspired by both lived experiences and online observations. She noticed a significant rise in TikTok content encouraging digital nomads to relocate to Cape Town, often showcasing co-working spaces, coastal scenery, and promoting a “live luxuriously for cheap” lifestyle.
Driven by this, she sought to explore how seemingly harmless social media content can have far-reaching economic and social consequences. She noted that many residents in Cape Town are grappling with the rising cost of living, yet these challenges are often discussed without fully acknowledging the role digital platforms play in shaping such realities.
For Naidoo, her academic journey was shaped by a passion for creative writing and film, which led her to pursue majors in Media Studies and English. “I have always been fascinated by the role that media plays in shaping society and believe that it has great potential in environmental activism. This fascination and belief inspired me to complete this degree,” she said.
Balancing personal responsibilities with academic demands proved challenging for Naidoo. However, she credits improved time management for helping her navigate these pressures. She also highlighted the initial difficulty of transitioning from physical texts to digital learning. “Having never used a laptop for studying purposes in high school, it was very new to me. It pushed me to improve my computer skills. Fortunately, the University offers valuable programmes to help students adapt,” she added.
Similarly, Norolela faced the challenge of working while studying, requiring her to quickly develop effective time management skills. She also had to grapple with the complexity of her research. “Analysing TikTok content may seem simple at first, but when you begin unpacking algorithms, representation, and real-world impact, it becomes highly layered and intensive,” she explained.
Reflecting on her research, Norolela identified a standout moment in uncovering the sharp increase in rental prices in Cape Town between 2020 and 2025, and being able to connect this trend to the rise of digital nomad content online.
Both graduates expressed deep appreciation for their support systems. “My family has been incredibly supportive, encouraging me to work hard. My parents supported my passion and ensured that I had everything I needed to complete my degree,” said Naidoo.
Norolela also acknowledged her sister, Ms Siyanda Norolela, as a key source of strength, providing both emotional and financial support during critical moments and remaining a constant source of encouragement.
Naidoo is currently pursuing her Honours degree in Media Studies, with a research focus on South African wildlife conservation awareness. She aspires to further her studies at master’s level and hopes to use her education to contribute meaningfully to society. “As someone who values nature and animal welfare, I would like to dedicate my time to volunteering for such causes,” she said.
Norolela is currently completing her Master’s degree in Media and Cultural Studies, focusing on AI-assisted digital storytelling and its potential to support indigenous-language children’s media in South Africa. Looking ahead, she envisions a career in academia. “I see myself lecturing, conducting research, and contributing to knowledge that speaks to African realities. After my master’s, I plan to pursue a PhD and continue building my career in this space,” she said.
