UKZN Anatomy Department Honours Body Donors

The annual Inspectorate and Reverence Ceremony was held by the Discipline of Clinical Anatomy for 28 bodies donated to UKZN for medical training and research purposes last year.

Religious leaders, UKZN’s Anatomy Department staff, management and families of the donors gathered at the Nelson R. Mandela Medical School in Durban and on the Westville campus to honour those who donated their bodies to the University to use in training and research by medical students and allied health science students.

Co-ordinator of the Body Donor Programme at UKZN Mr Salem Kharwa thanked donors, donor families and all staff within the Discipline of Clinical Anatomy for their contribution in ensuring that the common objective of teaching and learning in the dissecting halls progressed smoothly while all processes, guidelines and conditions contained in the Human Tissue Act were adhered to.

‘Donated bodies are exceedingly valued and respected as they are an important resource in teaching, enabling the School to demonstrate practical anatomical dissections for students,’ said Kharwa.

‘Souls who we are honouring today have selflessly given their bodies for the benefit of this country. Competent medical practitioners are born out of their generosity, and by that they have changed the world for the better,’ said Pastor Alby Justino of the Durban Christian Centre.

The Discipline of Clinical Anatomy offers undergraduate courses in Anatomy to Medical and allied health professional students and courses are also offered at postgraduate level for Medical Science students.

Members of the Anatomy discipline will soon embark on a Body Donor Programme Roadshow during which information will be given about body donation.
