On Saturday, 2 June this year, Professor Dennis Schauffer, Professor Emeritus at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, presented a paper at the Art, Materiality and Representation Conference.
The conference was jointly organised by the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Museum (Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas) and the Department of Anthropology, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. The paper, presented in the Senate House SOAS, was titled Fishes out of water.
It concerned issues of decontextualisation and aestheticisation in the display of African cultural artefacts in the Phansi Museum and the Killie Campbell Museum in Durban, South Africa. The paper was well received and has been submitted for possible publication in a collection of selected papers.
