The Varsity Youth In Action Network’s first programme for 2019 was a campaign to collect 500 sanitary pads for needy students.
The newly-formed society on the Edgewood campus is a student-run voluntary community service organisation that is committed to addressing the socio-economic challenges confronting students as well developing various aspects of their lives both on and off campus.
Following a social media campaign using various hash tags such #ShareTheDignity #FreeThePeriod and #500isPossible, the #500SanitaryPads campaign was well-supported by both students and staff members.
Network Chairperson, Mr Lebohang Mathobela said, ‘We are delighted and truly grateful for the overwhelming support we received from staff and students. We might have not reached our target today but the campaign was the start of big things to come.’ He added that the organisation will work closely with Residence Assistants and House Committees to reach needy students in residences and on the campus at large.
Community Development Officer, Ms Thembelihle Ntombela, said it was humbling to see staff and students giving back to the community. She encouraged students to participate in community service, because, ‘as human beings, we rise by lifting others.’
