School of Education Hosts German Teacher Exchange Programme Members

Representatives of the ENSA Teacher Exchange Programme in Berlin on a visit to South Africa to explore issues of sustainable development were co-hosted by UKZN’s School of Education.

The group, comprising eight students and two lecturers, were primarily hosted by the Wildlife Society of South Africa in Howick, and visited schools, historical and environmental sites, an NGO – 1000 Hills Community Helpers in Inchanga, and uShaka in Durban.   

They spent two days at the School of Education where they attended a seminar.

UKZN lecturer and academic leader for community engagement Dr Angela James said: ‘The seminar was held to showcase Environmental Sustainable Development (ESD) teaching, research and community initiatives done by our staff and students, and to celebrate, recognise and value ESD work while also acknowledging the importance of ESD across disciplines, institutions and countries.’

The seminar encouraged student interaction in engaging with campus and community initiatives in ESD. The German students found it to be ‘an unbelievable experience with great knowledge shared’.

Said James: ‘As the plan is to develop the exchange process for students and staff, this visit was important to discuss further developments.’

James, staff colleague Dr Samukelisiwe Mngomezulu, and two students from the School of Education –  Ms Denosha Mungal and Ms Sbongimpile Mdabe - will attend an ENSA international symposium and evaluation conference titled: School Exchange Now and Then – 2030 and Beyond, in Berlin this month.
