Fourth-year students from UKZN’s Nursing Discipline commemorated Autism Month in April by participating in several awareness events hosted by Action in Autism - a non-profit organisation which raises awareness about autism and provides early learning intervention for children diagnosed with it.
The students participated in support groups for parents of autistic children and were also involved in a diagnostic clinic held by the organisation on a quarterly basis.
Students spent time with the special needs children and were involved in a poster-making session in preparation for the Silent Walk in the second week of the month.
Mental Health lecturers, Mrs Ann Jarvis, Mrs Charlotte Engelbrecht and Professor Gugu Mchunu, who is also an Action in Autism board member, accompanied the students.
