Winning Against Depression was the theme of a Mental Health Awareness evening held on the Medical School campus.
The event drew representatives from a variety of associations and organisations including the Medical School’s Student Representative Council (MSRC); the Nazareth Tertiary Student Association, the Twelve Apostles Student Association, the Twelve Apostle Church In Christ (TTACCSO), students and alumni.
MSRC Community Development Officer Mr Zimkhitha Ntozakhe said the event was held to heighten mental health awareness among UKZN students, with a focus on depression. It was hoped that such awareness would help students cope better with what is referred to as “stresses of the 21st century”.
Chairperson of TTACCSO at the Medical School Mr Vusi Shabalala highlighted that one of the risk factors of depression was isolation thus interaction between students could alleviate some of the burden.
Former MSRC President, Mr Ahmed Raja, commended TTACCSO for this initiative saying: ‘It’s brave of TTACCSO to take a lead in this initiative - I feel it’s a first step in the right direction.’
The event started on a high with a variety of fun activities for all.
