UKZN’s Extended Learning Division offers a South African Sign Language programme for those who want to develop a knowledge and understanding of the medium and thus improve their communication skills.
Participants in the programme get the opportunity to learn how to achieve a sufficient level of proficiency in the use of South African Sign Language to enable them to effectively communicate with Deaf and hearing-impaired people in the country - especially those who they may employ or work with.
Positives about learning a new language are that it assists in getting the human brain in shape by stimulating and increasing its capabilities and can also help improve cognitive skills, creative thinking, brain functionality, memory, spatial awareness, and mental rotation.
Getting to know a new language means getting to know the community, the culture and the people who use the communication tool. By being able to communicate, it is possible to develop new relationships with individuals within the Deaf community.
Knowing sign language provides a person with a better understanding of the challenges the community faces and assists in interacting with them.
Being able to communicate with Deaf people in the workplace will assist them gain a better understanding of their job functions and aid in their development.
The intake for the Sign Language programme starts on 25 October.
