Master’s student in Development Studies, Mr Nqubenhle Mbokazi has been awarded the prestigious Kader Asmal Fellowship to pursue his postgraduate studies at the University College Cork in Ireland for 12 months.
It will be Mbokazi’s first experience of flying and visiting overseas, which he views as a stepping-stone in his life’s journey.
‘I plan to expand my academic knowledge in the field of co-operatives and sustainable development,’ he said. ‘I am also looking forward to new friends and creating networks that will become a tangible asset for South Africa. I can’t wait to learn about different cultures, religions and languages from other overseas students.’
Mbokazi hopes to contribute to the development of South Africa as well as Africa. ‘I want to be part of the African solution created for African problems, and help produce innovative solutions which will empower and emancipate communities where poverty is a problem. I also plan to influence national policies to achieve sustainable development goals,’ he added.
Offering advice to students, he said: ‘These opportunities are there for us to take advantage of. It is just a matter of starting that application and dedicating yourself to finishing it.’ He is also willing to assist students to apply for scholarships.
