UKZN hosts National School Sports Championships
The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, held its winter edition of the National School Sports Championships at UKZN.
The Championships held annually in winter, summer and autumn – are aimed at encouraging both primary and high school learners across all provinces to engage in sport from an early age and to remain physically active.
This social cohesion programme is focused on nation-building and takes place at intra-school, inter-school, district, provincial and national levels.
This year, 4 000 students, including those living with disabilities, participated in sport such as chess, soccer, hockey, netball, rugby, tennis and volleyball.
The championships is used as a programme to identify talent; awarding those who excel with sports bursaries to attend sports-focused schools, thus creating a supporting pillar for both sport and education.
