Latex Writing Workshop held at UKZN
The UKZN Mu Eta Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN) Honours Society hosted a latex writing workshop for postgraduate students in the Electrical Engineering LAN on the Howard College campus.
The workshop, held in partnership with Overleaf Latex in the United Kingdom, was organised to assist students in research writing skills. The focus was also on preparing postgraduate students for thesis, journal and conference writing in line with scientific standards.
Mu Eta Vice-President, Ms Divina Govender, opened the workshop with a talk on the benefits of joining IEEE, while Mu Eta Chapter President and Overleaf Advisor, Mr Dauda Ayanda, took the participants through a practical introduction and working with Overleaf Latex.
Dr Armeline Mafuta was the lead instructor for the workshop during which participants received worksheets in zip files via their respective emails for a given task to be completed. While Mafuta was giving a slide presentation, each of the instructors gave demonstrations; ensuring that participants fully understood and reproduced the assignment.
‘The workshop was excellent for me. My lecturer encouraged me to write my thesis in latex format but I was scared because I did not know much about coding. This workshop has taught me a lot,’ said Mr Cong Liu, a PhD candidate in Chemical Engineering.
Mr Bukola Ajewole, an MSc graduate in Electronic Engineering, said: ‘The workshop was an educative, informative and eye-opening experience.’
The event was put together by the IEEE-HKN Mu Eta Chapter committee comprising Exco and Mu Eta volunteers, Ms Ansuri Reddy and Mr Sahil Hansraj.
The workshop was attended by approximately 30 participants from the Disciplines of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering; Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Hansraj gave the closing remarks on behalf of Mu Eta faculty advisor, Professor Thomas Afullo.
