Fun for All at School of Engineering Sports Day
The School of Engineering held its annual Sports Day on UKZN’s rugby ground with the overall victor’s trophy being awarded to the School Office team.
‘The School of Engineering hosts a sports day/team building event annually to encourage teamwork among staff and to get to know new employees as well as to meet colleagues in various disciplines,’ said Ms Mary David, Facilities Manager for the Student Services Development Company. The event is organised annually by Ms Wendy Janssens, Mr Alan Naidoo of the Engineering Admin Office, and David.
The morning kicked off at 08h00 with fresh muffins and coffee, while Naidoo and Janssens were setting up the activities-course for the day. Engineering staff and staff from the College Office enjoyed participating in a range of different sporting activities such as a 2km fun walk/run, banana race, building blind-folded, a spoon and egg race, 400m team race, bucket-of-water competition as well as a game of tug-of-war.
Naidoo arranged for the Biokinetics team from the School of Health Sciences, who demonstrated aerobic exercises to get staff warmed up and ready for the games. Members of the Biokinetics team were on hand throughout the day providing physical health advice, testing for blood glucose and blood pressure, as well as advise staff about healthy living.
The day ended with a tasty meal that ensured efforts on the field were rewarded and appetites satisfied.
Dean of Engineering, Professor Glen Bright, thanked everyone involved. ‘It was an awesome day and so enjoyable to get together and better acquainted. Thank you to the School Office and the planning team for organising a fun-filled event,’ he said.
The Electrical Engineers team was overjoyed with its victory over the School Office in the tug-of-war challenge despite, the School Office representatives walking away with the Team of the Day trophy.
The School of Engineering thanks the planning team (Wendy, Alan, Mary) for an excellent event.
