Enactus UKZN at the Sustainable Living Expo
The eThekwini Municipality hosted its 5th annual Sustainable Living Expo at the Durban ICC Exhibition Centre from 17 to 19 May 2019. This unique, multidimensional event focuses on renewable energy and energy efficiency, waste minimisation, up-cycling and recycling, water harvesting and conservation, food security and greening, environmental advocacy, creative arts, health and wellbeing and social justice. The Exhibition provides a fantastic environment for the sharing of ideas, peer learning, networking whilst demonstrating the possibility for everyone to contribute towards building a more live-able, caring and sustainable community.
Enactus UKZN was invited to exhibit their Sack Space project at the sustainable living expo, a project that entails using a 25kg or 50kg sack to conduct vertical farming. This method proves to be sustainable because the skills needed to start the growth of the garden sack as well as the maintenance of the sack is transferred directly from the Enactus team to the farmers. This method of farming uses up to 60% less water and reduces the amount of land needed to farm.
It was an exciting experience for the team as well as for the people who visited the Sack Space exhibit, many were in awe of the method used to plant. Many of the Enactus members who attended found the expo very useful as they were able to socialise with relevant people and build some partnerships. Through the expo, our head of Publicity and Marketing Officer was able to get coverage on two radio stations, Izwi loMzansi and Vibe FM. The interviews were done on the spot and were fun and informative.
