Education students during a drug abuse and gender-based violence awareness campaign.Education Students Involved in Campus Community Upliftment
Fourth year Biological Science for Educators students from the School of Education engaged in an advocacy service-learning community engagement/outreach as part of their module to address issues affecting students and others on campus.
With a focus on noise, littering, drug abuse and gender-based violence (rape), they interacted with students, lecturers and professional staff on how such issues can be addressed on the Edgewood Campus.
The students displayed informative posters and played interactive games with participants to create awareness on such issues.
Student Mr Luthando Molefe said: ‘I applaud the module Biological Science for Educators Method 3 through Service-Learning and Research for responding to the problems that are a reality for many. These issues affect us on campus on a daily basis. Engaging in these awareness campaigns speak directly to everyday experiences and observations students come across on campus. For someone who is largely engaged in community outreach, this was one of the most important campaigns I have worked on.’
Another student Mr Wonder Tono added: ‘Being engaged in the service-learning project equipped me with knowledge and skills necessary for addressing problems affecting us as students and other people on campus. We would also like to thank our lecturer Dr Tamirirofa Chirikure for engaging us on such projects as students.’
