UKZN Rugby Players receive Awards for their Achievements
Rugby stars Mr Siphathisene Dube and Mr Mzamo Majola received UKZN Prestige Scholarships at the recent Scholarship Awards ceremony in recognition of their outstanding performances on the field.
Bachelor of Business Administration student Dube was a member of both the KZN Wildebeest and Sharks 7s teams last year and was in the UKZN Impi side which won the FNB Varsity Shield.
‘Winning the scholarship means a lot to me as it has given me a chance to be able to finish my studies while being helped financially,’ said Dube. ‘Since I attend classes in the evening and also work as a personal trainer at Virgin Active it is often difficult maintaining a balance between everything. In spite of the obstacles I am pushing hard to finish my degree.’
Dube plans to combine his sports experience and business knowledge and one day open his own sports academy for under-privileged children.
Law student Majola, who was awarded a bursary to the Sharks academy last year, played for the Sharks U19 side and his list of accolades keeps growing.
‘In March, I left Durban for the U20 junior Springbok trials and training camps. I spent three months there before touring in Argentina and Italy. I have returned and I am currently playing for the Sharks U21 team. I love what I do - it keeps me motivated.
‘However, being committed to a professional rugby career makes getting to class a challenge sometimes. The work load is tough but we have to make some sacrifices to reach our goals,’ said Majola.
