Fun, Food, and Team Spirit at Humanities Sports Day

With clear skies and a lively atmosphere, the UKZN College of Humanities Sports’ Day offered staff a vibrant afternoon of sunshine, laughter, and camaraderie - a welcome break from busy schedules.

The event brought together colleagues from across the College for a day packed with fun, laughter, games, and delicious food.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College, Professor Nhlanhla Mkhize, formally welcomed staff and extended his best wishes for an enjoyable day dedicated to fostering and strengthening professional relationships.

“Events like this are very important, especially at a time of institutional restructuring,” said Mkhize. “We are committed to promoting greater mental health awareness in the workplace, and we believe that participation in such events can help relieve stress while fostering hope and renewed commitment to our Institution.”

The highlight of the day was the Pirate Challenge, a dynamic team-building activity that tested participants with tasks requiring strategy, problem-solving, and collaboration. From walking the plank to cracking complex conundrums, teams rose to the occasion with determination, humour, and spirited competition.

Ms Thuli Zama, whose team secured first prize, said the word games were the most challenging aspect of the event. “However, we remained focused and worked together as a team. The obstacles and quests not only tested our physical abilities and playful spirit but also gave us a mental workout. Fortunately, my team was as fun-loving and competitive as I am, so winning the war cry challenge gave us the confidence to take on every task,” she added.

Behind all the fun was the hardworking public relations team, who organised the event. Mr Dane Arumugam thanked them, saying: “We all had an incredible time. Hats off to your entire team. The hard work behind the scenes often goes unnoticed, but it truly made a difference.”

The day showcased the best of UKZN’s Humanities community - teamwork, joy, and a reminder that sometimes, the strongest bonds are built outside of boardrooms.
