Experiential Learning in Action for UKZN and University of Limpopo Accounting Students

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) School of Commerce hosted students from the University of Limpopo in partnership with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).

The engaging and interactive student development session was supported by representatives of UKZN’s Student Chapters of the African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA), the Association of Black Accountants of South Africa (ABASA), and Thuthuka.

The engagement, fully endorsed by the College of Law and Management Studies, aligned with the University’s strategic goal of creating student experiences that help produce graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to build meaningful and agile careers that can be sustained and adapted over a lifetime.

The event provided a platform for knowledge-sharing, networking, and practical engagement between students from both universities. The programme opened with remarks from distinguished speakers, including the Head of Accounting Programmes at UKZN, Professor Suren Pillay; Mr Lungani Gcwensa and Academic Trainee Mr Siphesihle Ngcobo, who offered insights into the Accounting programme and shared perspectives on effective teaching methods at the University. Additionally, they elaborated on the University’s teaching style, giving attendees a deeper understanding of the learning environment.

A representative from SAICA, Mr Prosper Mutambirwa AGA(SA), addressed the group sharing his journey from undergraduate studies to his current professional achievements, offering valuable career guidance and inspiration. Furthermore, a speaker from the University of Limpopo enriched the session by discussing the three pillars of university education, igniting enthusiasm and encouraging active participation among all attendees.

Following the presentations, students participated in a dynamic business game, facilitated by the representatives from the Accounting student organisations. This interactive session encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical and competitive setting.

Beyond the activities, the day offered a unique opportunity for students from both universities to connect. They exchanged experiences about their academic journeys, compared programme structures at the respective institutions, and learned from one another’s perspective. 

The event not only strengthened the relationship between UKZN and the University of Limpopo, but also demonstrated the value of collaboration between institutions and professional organisations in shaping the future of the Accounting profession.

Overall, the day was a resounding success, providing students with an enriching experience, fostering meaningful relationships, and reinforcing the collaborative spirit between universities and professional organisations.
