Guests were warmly welcomed by UKZN’s Alumni Relations Manager, Mr Finn Christensen, who introduced the two guest speakers: Dr Qiniso Mlita, President of Convocation, and Professor Naven Chetty, College Dean of Teaching and Learning within the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science.
Mlita provided a very comprehensive overview of the current developments and future plans of the University - highlighting Project Renewal and the importance of all graduates giving back to their alma mater in any way possible. Mlita elaborated on the role of the Convocation Executive and the numerous and important high-level initiatives and duties they have successfully achieved.
A highlight of the afternoon was an address by Professor Naven Chetty, College Dean of Teaching and Learning. who shared thought-provoking insights on the future of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in South Africa, noting that the country stood at a pivotal juncture in its transformation journey.
In his address, Chetty stressed the urgent need to bridge the gap between academic research, innovation and the dynamic needs of industry - a critical factor for both economic development and social progress. Chetty explored strategies to realign STEM curricula, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, harness emerging technologies, and strengthen industry-academic partnerships to prepare a future-ready workforce.
He also highlighted scalable models, successful policy interventions, and actionable frameworks that would help ensure STEM education in South Africa remains inclusive, innovative, and aligned with 21st-Century industrial demands. His message resonated strongly with guests, many of who are professionals working across diverse sectors.
The Anew Hotel Hilton setting offered an elegant atmosphere, with hearty conversation, shared memories and new connections. Alumni expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting how such events reaffirmed their lifelong bond with UKZN.
