Dr Roushka Bhagwan-Valjee has successfully completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Human Physiology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), marking the end of more than a decade of dedicated academic pursuit.
Her academic journey at UKZN began with her undergraduate studies, continued through honours and a master’s degree, and culminated in doctoral research with the potential to significantly impact global health.
Bhagwan-Valjee’s research focused on the development of biomarkers for sepsis, a life-threatening condition that remains a major challenge. Under the supervision of Professor Irene Mackraj, she explored the biomarker potential of small extracellular vesicles in sepsis patients. She identified a high abundance of CD63-, CD81-, and CD9-positive vesicles. Her findings suggested that CD63/CD9 colocalisation could serve as a promising target for sepsis diagnostics. This research was recognised internationally and presented at the Forum for Extracellular Vesicles (UKEV) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Scotland.
A significant highlight of her doctoral journey was a collaborative project between UKZN and the University of Oxford. At Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health, Bhagwan-Valjee conducted a pioneering study analysing surface marker profiles of small extracellular vesicles in patients with sepsis, hypertension, and both conditions combined. This research opened new pathways for identifying disease-specific vesicle subsets that could transform biomarker development for complex clinical conditions.
Reflecting on her journey, Bhagwan-Valjee said: “Completing my PhD represents not just academic fulfilment, but the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and personal growth. From the 17-year-old who first walked through UKZN’s gates to now, it’s been an incredible journey.”
While managing an intense research schedule, Bhagwan-Valjee also celebrated her marriage during her PhD studies - a testament to her resilience and dedication both inside and outside the laboratory. Outside her professional work, she enjoys baking, swimming, and spending quality time with family and friends.
