Street Law Students Inspire Positive Change at Durban Correctional Centre
Street Law students at UKZN’s School of Law held an awards ceremony for offenders at the Westville Correctional Centre, to mark the conclusion of their impactful outreach programme at the prison.
The programme, part of the final year LLB elective Street Law module facilitated by Dr Janine Hicks, requires Law students to undertake legal and rights education community engagement initiatives for people in various communities.
While some students chose to undertake outreach projects at local high schools or at community organisations, a team led by Ms Zamaswazi Mthuli opted to run their series of outreach workshops with around 160 offenders in the women, youth, remand and life centres at the Westville Prison, or Correctional Centre, as it is referred to. The School of Law has secured a Memorandum of Understanding with the Correctional Centre to undertake this legal and human rights educational programme on an annual basis.
‘We entered this experience to shed light on inmates’ rights and responsibilities, addressing important topics such as constitutional rights, criminal procedure, restorative justice and reintegration into society,’ said Mthuli.
She added that while their objective was to foster self-advocacy, critical thinking and positive change the experience of working with the inmates and the Correctional Centre staff was a unique personal one for them as students as well.
‘This became much more than a task for us as with each visit, we witnessed the enthusiasm and commitment of the inmates,’ said Mthuli. ‘They engaged with the material, asked questions and shared their own stories. Their eagerness to learn and their desire for self-improvement deeply inspired us all. Dr Hicks, played a pivotal role in guiding and supporting us through every step of the project. Without her encouragement and oversight, this programme would not have been possible,’ said Mthuli.
‘We also owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the facility staff, whose kindness, punctuality and professionalism made our time there meaningful and enjoyable. They made us feel welcome and valued, allowing us to focus entirely on making an impact.’
