UKZN’s Spring Graduation ceremony was the scene of a cherished family celebration when Ms Georgia Settler - who received raucous applause from the hall for her BA Honours (Fine Arts) cum laude degree - was congratulated on stage by her father, Professor Federico Settler of the School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics.
Georgia completed her undergraduate studies at UKZN, doing a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree in 2021, specialising in ceramics, and in 2022 enrolled for her BA Honours to deepen her theoretical knowledge, again specialising in ceramics and under the supervision of Dr Jess Draper.
A recipient of the Rita Strong Bursary for 2023, her dissertation was titled: Queer Bodies and Ceramic Shapes: Exploring Queer Surrealism in Science Fiction and Ceramic Forms, which evidently drew high praise from her examiners.
She is currently studying for her MA in Visual Arts under the supervision Dr Katherine Arbuckle, with hopes to pursue an academic career.
Her delighted father Professor Settler, who stepped forward from his seat onto the stage to congratulate his daughter, said afterwards: ‘This is an immensely joyful moment for us as a family. We are deeply aware of Georgia’s technical competencies as an artist and her ability to bring a range of theoretical concepts into beautiful conversations.
‘I am so very proud.’
