UKZN School of Applied Human Science senior lecturer, Dr Maud Mthembu, recently conducted a two-day workshop to prepare final-year Social Work students for their careers in the field.
This year’s workshop was hosted in collaboration with the South African National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO) seminars.
Said Mthembu, ‘Field practice is an integral part of social work education, equipping students with skills to confidently deal with a range of psycho-social and economic challenges in communities.’
Mr Luvuyo Makhaba, a lecturer in the Discipline of Psychology, discussed the significance of self-care and self-awareness within the counselling profession, and students actively engaged in these discussion topics that included ethical conduct, programmes for offenders, and time management.
Putting emphasis on taking note of distinct cultural backgrounds, representatives of the Ma’at Institute also advised students about cultural sensitivity during field practice and students.
The workshop culminated in an oath-taking ceremony led by Dr Siphiwe Motloung, a lecturer in the Discipline of Social Work. During this session, students signed the declaration to uphold social work values and adhere to an ethical code of conduct.
