In an effort to promote excellence in mathematics and science education, Mthethwamatics partnered with the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal to host a Teach The Nation (TTN) Mathematics and Be a Scientist online programme.
The five-day programme, which took place from 26 to 30 June 2023, catered to students in Grades 10, 11, and 12, aiming to inspire a love for these critical subjects.
The TTN Mathematics and Be a Scientist programme brought together a diverse group of participants, including academics from various universities, students from different schools and universities, as well as data analysts. This collaborative effort ensured a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for the students involved.
Day one of the programme kicked off with a focus on Algebra. Students delved into the world of equations, variables, number systems and operations, gaining a deeper understanding of this fundamental branch of mathematics. The day concluded with an exciting lesson on Genetics, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, presented by the School of Life Sciences. This interdisciplinary approach aimed to expose learners to various disciplines within the College.
Day two centred around mathematical functions. Participants explored different types of functions, including linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. The interactive lessons aimed to enhance students’ problem-solving skills and their ability to interpret and manipulate mathematical relationships.
On day three, learners were introduced to Euclidean Geometry, a branch of mathematics concerned with the study of shapes, sizes, and properties of figures and spaces. The day concluded with an exhilarating physics lesson and a chemistry show facilitated by the School of Chemistry and Physics, providing students with a glimpse into the fascinating world of these scientific disciplines.
Trigonometry took the spotlight on day four of the programme. Learners discovered the principles and applications of trigonometric functions, including angles, triangles, and periodic phenomena. Additionally, they were given valuable insights into life as an Engineering student at UKZN, fostering an interest in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The final day of the programme was dedicated to the captivating topic of probabilities. Students explored the concepts of chance, uncertainty, and statistical analysis, equipping them with vital skills for decision-making and problem-solving in various real-life scenarios. The event culminated in an awe-inspiring science show and lucky draws, leaving the participants in awe and providing them with memorable experiences.
Ms Kausha Pillay, who attended TTN as a Grade 11 learner in 2022, said, ‘Last year while attending the TTN programme, I found the lessons to be very helpful and comprehensive. I also saw it as an opportunity to help my fellow students by doing what I love: teaching Mathematics.’ Pillay was indeed afforded an opportunity to facilitate Functions to Grade 11 learners in the 2023 TTN, adding, ‘It was very exciting to be a part of the teaching team this year and I hope to do it again next year.’
On behalf of the organising team, Dr Simo Mthethwa explained, ‘One of the TTN’s main objectives is to promote mathematics through innovative teaching.’
TTN is a yearly programme offered for free online by Mthethwamatics and the CAES. ‘Any learner can partake in the TTN programme, and of course, any teacher. We thank all the facilitators who delivered world-class lessons this year, and we thank all the 260 learners who attended the programme, we hope to see them and other new learners next year,’ said Mthethwa.
The Teach The Nation Mathematics and Be a Scientist programme succeeded in creating a dynamic learning environment where students could explore the beauty and practicality of mathematics and science. By incorporating a wide range of topics and collaborating with experts in the field, Mthethwamatics and UKZN College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science fostered a love for these subjects, inspiring the next generation of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers.
