Enactus Leaders Feature on SABC-2’s Morning Live TV Programme
Members of Enactus UKZN attended a business breakfast in Durban where they addressed questions to KwaZulu-Natal’s Premier, Mr Senzo Mchunu, during the event being filmed for the SABC-2 television programme, Morning Live.
Enactus leaders who attended were General Secretary Mr Mluleki Mzimela; Head of Finance, Mr Mawande Nzama; Head of Publicity and Marketing, Ms Bongeka Dlamini, and Mr Thabani Joyisa.
The breakfast, at which Mchunu delivered his State of the Youth address as part of his 100 days in office report back, formed part of The New Age Business Briefing.
In his address, the Premier provided background on work done by his office which included the construction of houses in Pietermaritzburg, Port Shepstone and Kwadukuza in former slum and informal settlement areas. ‘Some of the houses there have been completed. There is just a shortage of water and toilets but there is a lot of progress on the ground,’ said Mchunu.
The Premier also spoke about ‘engaging communities on the challenge of electricity distribution’.
Guests were given the opportunity to ask Mchunu questions about issues related to the youth and his term of office. Concerns raised included the number of murders in KwaZulu-Natal, drug and substance abuse by the youth and the high general crime rate.
Enactus members Mzimela and Nzama were the voice of the youth of Kwazulu-Natal as they posed questions to the Premier.
Mzimela’s question was: ‘Do you think that every government programme - such as the Makhathini flats project in the uMkhanyakude district municipality - should have a yearly review provision to ensure effectiveness?’
Nzama first commented on how he felt some government initiatives for the youth were based on assumptions and took a “one-solution-fits-all” approach, before asking: ‘How does the government effectively communicate with the youth to find out their needs?’
These questions led to senior members of the Premier’s Office as well as big business leaders wanting to know more about Enactus and the work the organisation does. Namely the MEC of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Ms Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, Rev M.S Khumalo, General Manager of Stakeholder Co-ordination of the Premier’s office and Ms Nosihle Mthethwa, Corporate Affairs Specialist of Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI) in KwaZulu-Natal
The Enactus members proved to be excellent ambassadors for the University of Kwazulu-Natal and its organisation both at the breakfast and on TV!
