UKZN Hosts Council for Geosciences Roadshow
UKZN proudly hosted the Council for Geosciences (CGS) on Friday, 12 September at the Westville campus. The visit was part of the CGS’s roadshow which has made its way to campuses throughout the country with a view to increasing the Council’s visibility amongst students and academics in the geosciences.
The presentation delivered by the Council provided information on bursaries, internships and employment opportunities. The event was attended by a cohort of third and fourth-year students.
The CGS is one of the National Science Councils of South Africa and is the legal successor to the Geological Survey of South Africa, formed in 1912 by the amalgamation of three former Surveys, the oldest of which – the Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope – was founded in 1895. The Geoscience Act 100 of 1993 established the CGS in its present form. Today, the Council is a modern institution, boasting excellent facilities and expertise, and ranking among the best in Africa.
CGS offers services in geoscience mapping, water resource assessment and protection, minerals development, environment and chemical geohazards, engineering geoscience and physical geohazards, education and information.
