Making a Difference in the Fight Against Cancer
UKZN’s Division of Corporate Relations joined forces with the Reservoir Hills Sports and Recreation Club to host another successful Cansa Relay For Life.
The Sports Club focuses on various community upliftment projects, with special emphasis on youth development.
Said Secretary of the Club, Mr Selvan Pillay, ‘There are 17 informal settlements in Reservoir Hills and a large formal settlement. Our club provides a platform for the youth to involve themselves in positive activities as youngsters are currently being destroyed because of easy access to drugs and alcohol.
‘We are hopeful that our club can redirect the interest and mindset of our youth through working with them in our area as well as in surrounding schools,’ said Pillay
The relay was held at the Siripat Sports fields in Reservoir Hills to educate the community and raise funds for research and support services. Relay teams walked from 6pm on 26 April to 6am on 27 April.
Corporate Relations generously donated head bands, T-shirts and arm bands to participants in the event while the UKZN Westville Branch had a stand at the Cansa Relay, which was manned by Ms Sushie Rampersad and Ms Yogi Joseph.
The club has raised about R200 000 in the past two Relays all of which was donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa.
Regional Manager of CANSA, Ms Cara Noble, said with the University’s help, CANSA was able to provide an important service to the public and communities.
Services offered by CANSA include counselling, screening, patient care, training and an interim home for cancer patients on treatment at Mkuhla House.
