UKZN Cum Laude Student Continues to Shine

Ms Nokwanda Nzuza, who graduated with a Masters’ degree in Anthropology Cum Laude earlier this year, has continued to shine and make UKZN proud.

Nzuza is currently employed by the eThekwini Municipality and is part of the Municipality Institute of Learning (MILE) programme which seeks to form relationships with academia.

Nzuza is on the eThekwini Research Symposium committee which has members from academic institutions as well as the municipality who are co-ordinating the 2nd Research Symposium, titled: “Sustainable Livelihoods”, in Durban later this month.

The eThekwini-University Research Symposium is a joint initiative between MILE, the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) and UKZN. A key objective of the Symposium is about sharing knowledge and identifying new research areas relevant to local government which can have a meaningful applied context.

Thus the idea is to provide networking opportunities and to further strengthen collaboration between academia and municipal practitioners. It is also about providing an opportunity for postgraduate students to further engage with partners who are looking to fund innovative research.

Nzuza says although it is hard work she has enjoyed working on the MILE initiative. In October, she presented a paper from her Masters research at the Humanities Postgraduate Conference, and has also enrolled for her doctorate with Dr Maheshvari Naidu as her supervisor. Her study focuses on the renegotiating of self-image and sexuality of young African breast cancer survivors.

Naidu said: ‘This work experience is valuable as Nokwanda is fortunate to be working in a space that allows her intellectual growth and contact with academia, while she pursues her own academic journey.’
