
Humanities Academics Awarded Distinguished Teachers’ Award
UKZN’s 2015 Distinguished Teachers’ Award (DTA) has been presented to two Lecturers from the College of Humanities - Professor Thabo Msibi and Dr Suzanne Francis.
UKZN’s 2015 Distinguished Teachers’ Award (DTA) has been presented to two Lecturers from the College of Humanities - Professor Thabo Msibi and Dr Suzanne Francis.
The Educational Leadership, Management and Policy (ELMP) Discipline has set a record by producing 36 postgraduate students - eight PhDs and 28 MEds - this year.
The National Head of the South African Police Service: Vehicle Fleet, Major-General Karel Francois Husselmann (54), graduated with a PhD in Criminology and Forensic Studies.
The experiences of international postgraduate students studying at UKZN formed the topic of a thesis by Masters in Educational Psychology cum laude graduate, Ms Peace Ginika Nwokedi.
School of Applied Human Sciences employee, Mr Sazelo Mkhize, graduated with a PhD in Criminology and Forensic Studies, his thesis examining cultures among senior members of the South African Police Services.
‘I have no words to describe the feeling,’ said Mkhize. ‘I am more than excited. I feel I can stand on top of a mountain and just sing that I made it at last.’
Father and daughter, Dr Visham Budaloo and Ms Vandena Budaloo, earned their degrees from UKZN. Visham graduated with a PhD in Mathematics Education and Vandena with her MBChB degree.
‘I am proud my daughter has once again attained success,’ said Visham. ‘Her success has always been paramount to me. I was hoping to graduate with her, when I enrolled for my degree in 2012. I am grateful to the Lord for his blessings in allowing us both to attain our dreams,’ he said.
Ten excited education students, supervised by Dr Simon Khoza, graduated from UKZN, nine with master’s degrees and the other with a PhD.
The students were Mr Kehdinga Fomunyam (PhD), Mr Wayne David, Ms Charlotte Galane, Mr Marcell McKnight, Mr Cedric Mpungose, Mr Leonard Mqadi, Ms Maureen Mutesi, Mr Andrew Nhlongo, Mr Sphesihle Zuma and Ms Tinyiko Zuma.
A Durban Teacher, Mrs Sanam Isseri, examined the school lives of high functioning immigrant learners in her research study for her master’s degree.
And Isseri’s hard work was rewarded when she graduated with a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from UKZN. She said the aim of her study was to illustrate how well the youngsters coped with circumstances.
Ms Jennifer Sheokarah is a first generation university student, the first child in her family to obtain a degree.
Being awarded her Bachelor of Education degree summa cum laude is a great achievement which has made her parents very proud.
