UKZN Stand at Sustainable Living Expo

UKZN’s School of Education was among 150 exhibitors at the Sustainable Living Exhibition hosted by the eThekwini Municipality at the Exhibition Centre in Durban.

The theme of UKZN’s exhibit was: Teachers for Sustainable Living UKZN.

The exhibition created an ideal platform on which a variety of people showcased green and sustainable products and services in various spheres.

UKZN’s stand was created by the Edgewood Environmental Forum (EEF) in partnership with the Green Campus Initiative (GCI), supervised by School of Education Academic Leader: Community Engagement, Dr Angela James.

The motive behind the stand was to encourage teachers to create teaching resources out of waste material and to actively engage with the learners in the process of creating these resources.

The bigger picture was about creating environmental awareness which included land pollution through littering and water conservation. A variety of items were made using plastic and cardboard materials.

Both teachers and learners from different schools were intrigued by the teaching resources created and had opportunities to expand their knowledge in terms of how to make society a better place to live in by taking care of the environment through the models created.

Many in-service and retired teachers visited the stand and commented on the work done.

A student teacher Mr Luthando Fundzo, who is the chairperson of the Edgewood Environmental Forum, was interviewed by a local radio station at the exhibition Inanda FM, and discussed the aims of the show and the plans going forward. It was quite clear that the project could be extended to teacher workshops at different education institutions. 

Pre-service teachers had the opportunity to network with a variety of individuals, in and out of education spheres, ranging from college directors, who wanted this project to provide training in their institution, and teachers, who were also eager to find out how they could create teaching resources.

Comment from pre-service teachers indicated that the exhibition was very informative and exciting and created a lot of awareness. Pre-service teacher Buyelani Shangase said: ‘This was the best experience of my life, I love nature and I love gardening so I gained a lot of information from the exhibitors stations as I went around socialising with the people there. I am in a process of starting my project of a vegetable garden using the ideas I got from the exhibition.’

Fundzo said: ‘This experience has indeed pushed my boundaries in terms of what I am capable of. It should be opened to university students, especially first years so they can experience, what I have today.’
