BELS Academics Scoop Awards at International Conference

BELS students and staff at the Life Through Movement International Conference.

School of Health Sciences’ Biokinetics, Exercise and Leisure Sciences (BELS) academics, Dr Takshita Sookan and Dr Jeanne Grace, won awards at the Life Through Movement International Conference (LTMIC) in Port Elizabeth.

Sookan, a lecturer and research co-ordinator, received the Young Researcher Award while Grace was presented with the merit award/contribution to Life Through Movement – outside the profession of Biokinetics.

Sookan was also the opening keynote speaker at the conference hosted by the Biokinetics Association of South Africa. Leading Exercise Physiologist and author of various American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) books, Professor Larry Durstine, also delivered a presentation.

Sookan said it was an honour to receive the award after his inaugural keynote address to world renowned researchers in the field ‘including Professor Durstine whose books are an integral part of our academic curriculum.’

Grace’s award acknowledges an individual’s excellence while contributing to the advancement of Biokinetics over an extended period.

The youngest ever recipient of this award, Grace said he was very grateful for the recognition. ‘I acknowledge the opportunity given to me by BELS and UKZN to expand the Biokinetics profession.’

BELS Academic Leader Dr Rowena Naidoo commended Sookan and Grace for their achievement and applauded the School of Health Sciences for assisting the duo to attend the conference.

Postgraduate students were given the opportunity to present their research at the event.
