Healthy Eating on Limited Budget

The University of KwaZulu-Natal Campus Lions Club recently hosted an event to help students operating on a tight budget to follow a healthy eating plan despite their financial challenges.

‘Responding to challenges faced by students in the area of food security has been our main priority as a charity organisation from day one,’ said Charter President, Mr Ransford Antwi, who organised the event.

 The UKZN Campus Lions Club is registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO number 197-419) with the Department of Social Development and undertakes activities aimed at assisting disadvantaged students on the Pietermaritzburg campus.

The event focused on eating healthy on a limited budget and included discussion on questions such as how a student can manage his/her income or a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) monthly allowance; how to purchase, prepare and preserve cooked food to fit taste, diet as well as setting healthy goals.

Antwi said the event was well attended by students who enjoyed the presentation.

The Lions Club thanked presenters of the event from the Discipline of Dietetics and Human Nutrition: Ms Penelope Jarvie, Ms Nokwanda Mbambo, Ms Naseera Ebrahim, Ms Zamantungwa Khumalo, Ms Jashnah Kohdih and Ms Nonthuthuko Ndebele.

‘Without their support, the event would not have happened,’ said Antwi. He also thanked Lions Club President Mr Thabiso Mkhize, Zone 3 Chairman Lion Mr Neale Andrews and the Club’s District Governor, Ms Lyn Botha for their words of encouragement and support.
