The UKZN SRC was officially inaugurated at a ceremony held on the Westville campus on Saturday, 24 February.

Dr Rose Laka-Mathebula, Executive Director of the Student Services Division, welcomed everyone to the august event and congratulated the newly elected SRC members. She encouraged the SRC members to ensure the voices of students are heard and advised them to be committed to “servant leadership”.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr Siboniso Duma, an alumnus of the University and a member of the KZN provincial legislature. Duma advised the SRC members to be humble and asked them to ensure ‘students are not excluded from academics based on their poor background.’ He emphasised the importance of empowering women and reminded the SRC to assist those who had supported them.

Former President of the Central SRC, Ms Noxolo Bhengu, thanked everyone who had supported the former SRC during their tenure and said it was ‘an honour to serve.’ Bhengu congratulated the incoming SRC and reminded them that the ‘task at hand is not an easy one.’ She said that serving the student body was not about perks, but that it comes with a great deal of responsibility. ‘You must be willing to serve,’ she said.

Central SRC President, Mr Sandile Zondi, paid tribute to Bhengu and the former SRC cadres and promised the new SRC would protect students. He assured students the SRC would be available to assist and emphasised the importance of ‘uniting to defend the free’.

Entertainment was provided by the UKZN Choir, Buya Africa, Isambane and UKZN alumnus, Ms Boniswa Moto, served as programme director. UKZN’s Registrar, Mr Simon Mokoena, oversaw the oath taking ceremony.
