Ithimba lomhlaba jikelele eliholwa ngumcwaningi osemncane waseNingizimu Afrika nowayefunda e-UKZN, uDkt Kenda Knowles lisanda kumemezela ukubuyekezwa kwephepha locwaningo le-MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey (i-MGCLS).

Leliphepha locwaningo, elizoshicilelwa kwi-Astronomy & Astrophysics, luveze imiphumela emisha ejabulisayo lolwazi oluningi longoti abacwaninga ngezinto zasemkhathini ukuze bakazi ukuphendula imibuzo ethinta izinto ezinjengokuthi amaqoqo ezinkanyezi enzeka kanjani emhlabeni jikelele.

Lusebenzisa izipopolo ze-MeerKAT ze-South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (i-SARAO) esesifundeni iKaroo e-Northern Cape, lolucwaningo luveza amandla amangalisayo e-MeerKAT ngokuveza imifanekiso ecacile nebucayi yeqoqo lezinkanyezi ezili-115. I-MGCLS ikhiphe imifanekiso egqamile yesibhakabhaka esingacacile, ngenkathi iveza isikhala esikhulu. ‘Yilokhu obekuvele kwasenza ukuthi sibone izinhlobo ezehlukene zamaqoqo ezinkanyezi, ukuxhumana kwazo, eminingi emihle kakhulu,’ kuchaza u-Knowles. Nokho lokhu kuseyisiqalo. U-Knowles imiphumela iphendula eminye imibuzo emidala ‘kodwa futhi yembula izimfihlo ezintsha, okuyinto emnandi.’

U-Knowles waqala ukuhola ithimba ngonyaka wama-2019 ngenkathi esewumcwaningi owenza iziqu zobodokotela we-SARAO e-UKZN. ‘Iziqu zobodokotela ngazithola e-UKZN kanti ukwesekwa nokucijwa engakuthola khona ngesikhathi sami e-Astrophysics Research Centre (e-ARC) kwangibeka endaweni yokuhola lomsebenzi omkhulu,’ kusho yena.

U-Knowles uphawule wathi i-MeerKAT inamagalelo amakhulu emkhakheni wokucwaninga izinkanyezi, wathi ulwazi oluvela kulomsebenzi luzolekelela kakhulu ekuqeqesheni isizukulwane sangomuso songoti besayensi yomkhathi saseNingizimu Afrika.

Omunye wabo nguMnu Kabelo Kesebonye, umfundi wase-UKZN owenza iziqu zobudokotela esilulekwa nguSolwazi Matt Hilton wase-ARC. UKesebonye uphose esivivaneni ngokuhlola imiphumela yemifanekiso ye-MeerKAT.

Uphose esivivaneni ngolunye ucwaning ngesimo sokwenzeka kwezinkanyezi eqoqweni i-Abell 209. ‘Izinkanyezi eziningi ezihamba ngamaqoqo azisazenzi izinkanyezi kodwa akukaphenduleki ukuthi kuthatha isikhathi esingakanani ukuvaleka kwazo,’ kusho uKesebonye.

‘Ngenxa yobubanzi bendawo ebonwa yi-MeerKAT, siyakwazi ukuhlawumbisela izinga lokwenzeka kwezinkanyezi kuwona womabili amaqoqo.’

UKesebonye uqhubeka nocwaningo lokubumbeka kwezinkanyezi emaqoqweni ezinkanyezi, okungucwaningo lwezifundo zakhe zobudokotela.

Kulindeleke ukuthi lisimame iqhaza locwaningo lwemiphumela ye-MeerKAT ngenkathi abacwaningi bezinkanyezi nomkhathi bomhlaba wonke beqhubeka nokusebenzisa ulwazi lwenqolobane ye-SARAO MeerKAT ukuphendula eminye imibuzo yabo.
