Ms Amanda Dube (17), who matriculated with six distinctions from Siyabonga Secondary School in Umlazi, Durban, has registered at UKZN to study towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting degree in the College of Law and Management Studies.
Dube says her love of numbers determined her degree choice. ‘Accounting has always been my favourite subject and I am very excited that I now have the opportunity to get an internationally recognised degree at a fine institution like UKZN which has a reputation for academic excellence. It will all hopefully help make my CA(SA) dream come true!’
Her outstanding matric results, which included a 100% mark in Accounting, resulted in her earning KwaZulu-Natal’s Top Accounting Learner Award as well as a Thuthuka bursary from the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
‘One of the reasons SAICA runs various academic interventions such as school visits, provincial Development Camps and the Accounting Olympiad each year is to spark a love for Maths and Accounting among South Africa’s youth,’ said Mr Robert Zwane, SAICA Senior Executive for National Projects.
‘During one such intervention, Amanda was lucky enough to have engaged with SAICA first-hand about what being a chartered accountant is like and we are delighted to discover that she will be pursuing her love for Accounting at a tertiary level when she begins her BCom (Accounting) degree at UKZN this year.’
‘It feels surreal, such things don’t usually happen to me and I keep waiting for someone to tell me it’s a dream. I am however very happy that all my hard work paid off and that I was able to make my mom really proud,’ said Dube.
She is now looking forward to new challenges, new experiences, making new friends and working hard towards her goal of getting her degree in record time.
