Hard Work and Dedication Pay Off for Malegapuru W Makgoba Scholarship Recipients
Transitioning from high school to university can be a hard adjustment, but College of Law and Management Studies students Mr Samukelo Cele (BCom), Ms Phumla Bala (BCom), Mr Nikhil Mothalall (BCom), Ms Prinushlee Govender (BBusScience) and Ms Kimberleigh Saamlaal (LLB) not only managed to make that successful transition, but their outstanding academic performance as the five top-ranked undergraduates proceeding from first- to second-year in the College have earned them the Malegapuru W Makgoba Scholarship.
For Cele, maintaining a good academic performance continues to yield good results as he was awarded a bursary by Port Shepstone High School to further his studies and is now a recipient of the Malegapuru W Makgoba Scholarship.
‘When I heard that I got the scholarship, I was so shocked,’ he said. ‘I was just amazed that all the recognition I got back in high school was still continuing. In terms of financial need, what served me best was to work hard on my marks for possible funding and luckily, my efforts have paid off and what makes me so happy is that I can focus on my schoolwork without thinking about unpaid fees, withheld results and missed opportunities. My future plans are to qualify as a chartered accountant, a business mogul and motivational speaker,’ he said.
Relieving the weight of the financial burdens associated with her tuition off her mother’s shoulders is an opportunity Govender is grateful for. ‘My mother raised my two elder sisters and I as a single parent. I was encouraged by some of the staff in my faculty to keep up my good grades in order to get scholarships and bursaries so that I wouldn’t have to stress about finances and that’s exactly what I did. I’ve always been passionate about my education, so prioritising it came naturally I used that as part of my motivation to work diligently and prioritise my studies. Thankfully, it paid off and I was awarded this prestigious scholarship,’ said Govender. Looking to the future, Govender aims to use her business science qualification to pursue a career as a Chartered Financial Analyst.
