Like Father Like Son
Following in the giant footsteps of his father, a highly acclaimed Professor in Geography at UKZN, Derrick Beckedahl has achieved academic excellence, qualifying summa cum laude for a BSc Honours degree in Physics.
Beckedahl attributes his outstanding results to the study regime inculcated in him by his dad, Professor Heinz Beckedahl, and the enabling study environment both his parents created.
‘Reading through the lecture notes for the day’s lectures every afternoon was incredibly useful. I also made sure to minimize the number of distractions, for example by listening to music to eliminate unwanted noise, and working with the goal of understanding the content and not just being able to complete tutorials helps,’ said Beckedahl. The role played by his lecturers was also significant.’
Even with a mentor such as his dad by his side, Beckedahl has always sought to be his own person and make his own mark, modelling himself on a range of aspects which he has adopted from various people with whom he has interacted.
He is currently registered for an MSc degree in Computational Physics and hopes to continue on to a PhD and ultimately follow a career in research.
